Labuan Bajo Trip (Komodo Islands): Hiking at Padar

5:30 PM

[this post is bilingual]

Komodo Islands are not just well-known by its pink-sand beaches and underwater realm, but also the hills to hike. Beside challenging, you will also be amazed by the view in front of your eyes when you reach the top.

Bukannya males-malesan, lho. Tapi lututku pernah trauma jatuh, jadi aku was-was banget.

Hiking is always be my last choice to be put in my itinerary. Well, since it was included in my trip package, I had no choice. Leaving Komodo without experiencing the hiking sounds incomplete. My friends' pictures taken from Padar and Gili Lawa also made me envious. Finally, I decided to try hiking. Not that I'm lazy. I had experienced a very bad knee injury, so I was really worried.

Padar was the first hiking destination. Before departing to Labuan Bajo, I had been warned to wear shoes with good gripping because the land there is very slippery. My boss lent me her Palladium boots (thank you!). I also made myself sure that I wore the most comfortable clothes. At that time, I wore a short sundress with shorts inside it.

Good morning, Padar!

Jadi, keep going!

Hiking was started by climbing the wooden stairs. They said before there were stairs, many people fell on that part of the hill. So, the stairs are really helpful. If you think the view from the top of the stairs are beautiful, wait until you get to the top. You will see a more spectacular one. So, keep going!

Here we go!

Start here!

Padar ternyata ramai banget. Pas kita naik, sekitar jam 9 pagi, udah banyak yang turun. Mereka pasti orang-orang yang ngejar matahari terbit. Agak nyesel sih kita terlambat naik.

I was surprised seeing many people in Padar. Some of them were climbing down. They must be returning from sunrise hiking. Hiking early in the morning sounds like a better idea for me. Because when I hiked, it was just 9am but the sun already bit my skin. Few minutes leaving the wooden stairs, the track got more difficult and slippery. Actually, if it wasn't that slippery, climbing Padar seems okay. But because of it's slipperiness, I almost lost my breath many times.

Thank God someone brought a bluetooth speaker in my group. Music was really helping to set the mood and make us forget how far we should climb. We stopped few times to drink, catch our breath and spray the sunblock. Oh my, it was only 2 days but my skin colour had already turned like toast.

Sampai puncak...
Udah nggak bisa ngomong lagi. Liat aja foto-foto di bawah ini.

When I reached the top...
I couldn't say a word. Just take a look at below pictures.

I did it!

Speechless seeing what was in front of me...

This is truly 'wonderful Indonesia'

Tapi resiko ditanggung sendiri.
  • Menurutku, turunnya itu lebih bahaya dari naiknya. Salah napak dikit, kalian bisa merosot. Kalau yang takut kepleset, bisa bawa tongkat.
  • Musik buatku sih ngebantu banget naik ke atas. Kalau punya speaker bluetooth bisa dibawa. Tapi jangan sampai menghambat gerakan kalian ya.
  • Walaupun kulitku gampang tanning, tapi aku tetap sering-sering semprot sunblock SPF 110 biar nggak kebakar. Sakit tau kalo kena sunburn!
  • Air. Bawa air, kecuali kalian onta.
  • JANGAN BUANG SAMPAH SEMBARANGAN. Attitude, please.
Some tips for you who are newbies to hike in Komodo:
  • Wear a nice gripping shoes. Are flipflops okay? Oh, you can wear flipflop if you can handle the slipperiness. I couldn't.
  • I think the downhill track is more dangerous. If you take the wrong step, you will end up sliding the rocky path. If you're insecure, bring a long stick to help you.
  • Music plays important role to set the mood. If you have small bluetooth speaker, you can bring it and hang it on your backpack. But make sure it is not a hassle.
  • Even though my skin gets easily tanned, but I sprayed a lot of SPF 110 sunblock to avoid the sunburn. You know how hurts it can be to get a sunburn, right?
  • Water. Bring drinking water unless you're a camel.
  • DO NOT LITTER. Attitude, please. Respect the environment.
Bye, Padar!

See you in my next post!
